political scene with his brilliance and intellectual prowess culminating in being elected overwhelmingly
as the first president of the commonwealth in 1935, beating handily Emilio Aguinaldo
and Bishop Gregorio Aglipay. His vehement objections to the Hare-Hawes-Cutting Act
gave way to the Tydings-McDuffie Act. He's known in history as the "Father of the National Language".
